GPHC 2014: Oral, Poster, and Performance Presentation Guidelines

Submissions are being solicited in three formats:

            (1) Scholarly Presentations are publically delivered research works. Presentations should not be longer than 10 minutes and may include PowerPoint or Prezi graphics. Abstracts of 250 words or less must include identification of each undergraduate student author; an e-mail address and institutional affiliation for each author; and the name, e-mail address, and office telephone number of the professor or advisor who supervised the completion of the paper. Submissions that fail to follow these guidelines will not be reviewed.

            (2) Performances are public presentations of  music, dance, or drama.  Submission should include (for each proposed performance) a video sample of the performance sent in the form of an electronic file or a link to an online video, an attached message that identifies each undergraduate student performer; an e-mail address and institutional affiliation for each performer; and the name, e-mail address, and office telephone number of the professor or advisor who supervised or directed the performance (if any). Submissions that fail to follow these guidelines will not be reviewed.

            (3) Posters can be based on completed research papers or research papers that currently are in progress. Poster submissions require a 250 word abstract that clearly identifies the aim(s) of the paper, the rationale for the study, the participants or artifacts, and the findings (if applicable). Poster submissions must include a title page that identifies each undergraduate student author; an e-mail address and institutional affiliation for each author; and the name, e-mail address, and office telephone number of the professor or advisor who supervised the completion of the paper. Submissions that fail to follow these guidelines will not be reviewed.

All submissions must be solely authored by undergraduate students. Any submission that has been co-authored with a graduate student or a faculty member must be identified as such and may be subject to additional inquiry.

To be eligible to submit a paper, a performance, or a poster to the 2014 GHPCC, participants:

The Dennis Boe Award
Information and Guidelines

This award honors the late Dr. Dennis Boe, Director of Honors at East Central University. The untimely death of Dr. Boe robbed the NCHC and GPHC of a long-time leader, scholar, musician, poet, and good friend.  This guide will assist you with the steps required to submit a paper for consideration by the Boe Award Committee. If you have any further questions, please contact us at susan.buchanan@uafs.edu.

The Great Plains Honors Council sponsors the Dennis Boe Award to showcase and reward outstanding scholarly work by undergraduate honors program/college students of its member institutions. The submission deadline is Saturday, February 15, 2014 at 5:00 pm. This is a hard deadline; no extensions, no exceptions. Winners will be recognized at the 2014 GPHC conference in Fort Smith, Arkansas on March 29th, 2014. This is a merit-based, competitive award. If you are interested in submitting for a Boe Award, please read the following instructions carefully:

Description:

Scholarly papers describing research or creative activity from honors students in any academic field can be submitted for consideration. These are individual awards; team/group and multi-authored projects cannot be considered.

Guidelines for Consideration:
In order to be considered, proposals and papers must be submitted by the honors director/coordinator/dean of a GPHC dues-paid member institution. It is the GPHC dues that make this award possible.
• Each institution may endorse up to two entries.
• Boe paper proposals must be submitted online through the conference website.
• The completed Boe submission paper must be submitted electronically to susan.buchanan@uafs.edu with BOE SUBMISSION in the subject line. Only Microsoft Word file format documents will be accepted. The file must contain all elements of the paper (e.g., images). If a file cannot be opened, both the student and the honors director/coordinator/dean will be contacted by email and instructed to resubmit.
• The paper must not exceed 7,000 words and must follow standards and forms for its discipline.
• The submission must include a cover sheet with the following information: student's name, student's email address, school, name of his/her honors director/coordinator/dean, email address of that person, and the number of credit hours the student has completed. The pages of the paper itself must not bear the name or institution of the student to ensure anonymity in the judging.
• The final electronic proposal submission and paper must be received by 5:00 pm, Saturday, February 15, 2014.

Judging/Awards:
o Papers will be judged in blind readings by three faculty members from different disciplines and institutions whose students have not submitted papers for the Boe award.
o The judges will be appointed by the GPHC president-elect.The judges may elect not to make all six awards if it is determined that fewer papers meet the required standards of quality.
o Up to three $200 cash awards, and accompanying plaques, will be awarded to student winners who have earned no more than 60 credit hours at the time of the conference.  Directors should note that “college/university credit” includes dual enrollment courses taken during high school, and hours received by transfer from another institution.
o Up to three $200 cash awards, and accompanying plaques, will be awarded to student winners who have earned 61 or more credit hours and have not yet graduated at the time of the conference.

Requirements to receive a Boe Award
The student must register for and attend the 2014 GPHC Conference.
The Boe winner must present a brief (3-5 minute) oral summary of the research after dinner on Friday, March 28; no PowerPoint or other audio-visual equipment will be permitted.
The Boe winner must give 10 to 12 minute formal oral presentation on the research on Saturday, March 29. The Boe presentations will be scheduled in a plenary format (so that no other presentations compete).
An institution with a winning student or students is eligible to apply for one $500 travel grant to be used for travel to either the 2014 NCHC or the 2015 GPHC conference.

Papers not selected as Boe winners will automatically be considered for a regular oral presentation at the conference. There is no need to submit a separate presentation proposal.
